ONITSHA, Nigeria – Assistant Inspector General of police AIG in charge of the newly created zone 13 in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Danmallam Mohammed has cautioned his men against torture, extortion and extra judicial killing.
Danmallam Mohammed stated this while addressing journalists at the command headquarters on Wednesday . He said he will make sure that the police in the zone work according to the dictates of the laws and would not tolerate any human rights abuses and extortion from public by his men.
The newly inaugurated Zone 13 Command Headquarters include Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra States. According to him, nthe zone will protect human right and make sure that no police man extorts money or gets involved in extra judicially killing of any citizen in the zone.
“This morning I met with commissioner of police from Anambra,, Ebonyi and Enugu states, and we agreed to make sure that there is security of live and property in the zone. That the people of the zone will go about their normal businesses without any form of molestation from the police. We believe in constitutionalism, laws and order as well as due process in carrying out lawful duties.

As police officers, our main duty is that of protection of law and order. We are going to do our best within the ambite of the laws to ensure lives and property are protected in the zone. We are going to defend human rights as enumerated in the constitution, chapter 4.
Under my watch, we are going to ensure that human rights are protected .We are saying no to torture, extra judicially killing in the zone. We are also saying no to extortion by the police from the public” he said
A business mogul, Prince Arthur Eze, who attracted the zone 23 to Anambra state expressed happiness that people of the area will no longer go through the burden of transporting themselves to Umuahia, Abia State for their cases.
He enjoined the police to shun what they called heartlessness, brutality, unwarranted arrest or excessive and illegal use of force against civilians.
Arthur Eze, further harped on the need for the police to shun intimidation or verbal abuse and false allegations among other acts of victimization and enjoined the citizens to see the police as friends of the civilians. While commending IGP Adamu, for the newly inaugurated zone in his state, he called on President Mohammed Buhari to set up more infrastructural facilities that would uplift the living standard of the people of the zone.
