TOKYO, Japan – Yoshihide Suga has been elected as the next Prime Minister of Japan. He was elected by the Diet.
Yoshihide Suga is succeeding Shinzo Abe who stepped aside few weeks ago for health reasons. The election of Yoshihide Suga makes him the 99th Prime Minister of Japan.
Reacting to the development, U.S Secretary of State, Mr. Michael Pompeo congratulated Yoshihide Suga on his election by the Diet.
According to him, the U.S.-Japan Alliance is the cornerstone of peace, security, and prosperity in a free and open Indo-Pacific and is central to upholding a rules-based international order.
He said the United States looks forward to working with Prime Minister Suga in promoting the Alliance as a force for transparency, accountability, openness, prosperity, and peace in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.

“Congratulations, as well, to Toshimitsu Motegi on continuing in his tenure as Foreign Minister”, he said and thanked the former Prime Minister Abe for his unrelenting work to champion the Alliance and promote the shared values of the American and Japanese people.
Until his election, Yoshihide Suga was President of the Liberal Democratic Party. Now 71, he was born December 6, 1948
