ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has formerly withdrawn from ongoing World Economic Forum(WEF) in Cape Town, South Africa. Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osibanjo was to represent Nigeria at the forum.

He did not attend but went into a crucial meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geofry Onyema.

Nigeria pulled out of the meeting to protest continued xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Malawi had earlier on pulled out of the WEF.

Presidents Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Felix Tshisekedi (DRC) and Peter Mutharika (Malawi) have all withdrawn from the event. However, there are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may recall Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa for consultation.

A source who spoke to reporters in Abuja hinted that the president is contemplating recall of the ambassador.
