THE WORLD is standing on the edge of a “catastrophic” regional war tonight after a massive military escalation saw the US and Israel trade devastating blows with Iran.
In a series of “major combat operations” dubbed Operation Epic Fury, American and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes across Iran, reportedly hitting targets in Tehran, Shiraz, and Isfahan.
But as the Middle East threatens to spiral into total chaos, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a desperate plea for both sides to “step back from the brink.”
In a hard-hitting statement, the UN chief condemned the use of force, warning that the retaliatory strikes being traded across the region are a direct threat to global security.
”I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation,” Guterres warned. “Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability.”
The Secretary-General reminded world leaders that there is “no viable alternative” to peace, urging all parties to ditch the missiles and return to the negotiating table immediately.
The current explosion of violence follows months of simmering tension. Earlier today:
US & Israel launched what they described as “pre-emptive” strikes against Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.
Iran hit back almost instantly, launching waves of drones and missiles at Israeli cities and US military bases in the Gulf.
Casualties are feared to be high, with reports emerging of a strike on a school in southern Iran and explosions rocking major cities.
The UN has now invoked the “United Nations Charter,” reminding both Washington and Tehran that international law strictly prohibits the use of force against the independence of any state.
The sudden surge in fighting has effectively torched ongoing diplomatic efforts in Geneva. Guterres insisted that the UN Charter remains the only “foundation” for peace, but with smoke still rising over Tehran and sirens wailing in Tel Aviv, the path back to the boardroom looks further away than ever.
As the US military prepares for what President Trump has called “major combat operations,” the UN chief’s message was clear: Stop now, or the whole region goes up in flames.
This latest conflict marks the most serious escalation since the 12-day war of June 2025. While previous skirmishes were contained, the scale of today’s “Epic Fury” operation—targeting leadership compounds and nuclear sites—suggests a shift toward full-scale war.
With Iran’s Revolutionary Guard already launching a “new wave” of missiles at US bases in the Gulf, the world now waits to see if the UN’s call for a “peaceful settlement” will be heard, or if 2026 will be the year the Middle East faces its darkest chapter yet.
