A FAST-MOVING murder investigation has been launched after a man’s body was discovered hidden in a Kent woodland following a midnight police raid at a property in leafy Wimbledon.
Scotland Yard detectives have arrested two men on suspicion of murder after the pair unexpectedly handed themselves in at a police station miles away from the suspected crime scene.
The grim saga began in the late hours of Thursday, 9 July, when panicked calls alerted police to a potential killing at an address on Kingfisher Court—a quiet residential pocket in Wimbledon, South West London.
Blue lights flooded the scene at around 10:55 PM as officers rushed to the property. Armed with emergency powers, cops breached the address expecting to find a victim. Instead, they walked into an empty flat.
However, following a forensic sweep of the property, officers uncovered disturbing evidence suggesting that a violent struggle had taken place and that someone had come to severe harm inside the home. Realising they were dealing with a potential body-snatch murder, top detectives immediately launched a massive, race-against-time manhunt.
The investigation took a dramatic twist on Friday, 10 July, when two suspects unexpectedly walked through the front doors of Medway Police Station in Gillingham, Kent—more than 40 miles away from the initial Wimbledon crime scene.
The men, aged 27 and 32, were immediately detained by Kent police officers on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody where they are facing grueling interrogation by Metropolitan Police homicide detectives.
Information gathered following the arrests led specialist officers to a dense, isolated wooded area in Borstal, Kent, later that afternoon. It was there that search teams made the tragic discovery of a man’s body.
While formal identification has not yet taken place, the Metropolitan Police revealed they believe they know the identity of the victim. His distraught next-of-kin have been informed and are currently being comforted by specially trained liaison officers.
The Met confirmed that the victim and the two primary suspects were “known to each other,” ruling out the theory of a random attack. A third man has also been swept up in the dragnet, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Ben Dalloway, who is leading the high-stakes investigation, praised his team for their rapid response but urged the public to help fill in the blanks.
“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family who are understandably distraught at their loss. We will continue to offer them every support,” DI Dalloway said.
“This has been a fast-moving investigation and we are working tirelessly to establish the exact circumstances of the incident. Although we have made two arrests and do not believe there is any wider risk to the public, we would ask that anyone with information comes forward to police as soon as possible.”
Forensic teams are expected to remain at both the Wimbledon property and the Borstal woodland over the weekend as they search for vital clues and weapons.
Anyone with any information, CCTV, or dashcam footage is urged to call police urgently on 101, quoting CAD 9504/9JUL.
