The University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has advanced reasons for the delay in calling off the four months strike embarked upon by the union since members met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka made the revelation while speaking on Star Fm in Lagos. He said ASUU could not hold the scheduled meeting following the death of Professor Festus Iyayi who was killed on the spot and two others when Governor Idris Wada’s convoy ran into the vehicle conveying him to the venue of the national executive council meeting in Kano State.

“As soon as we received the call, we took his corpse to Benin City and told the wife”, he said, adding that everybody started weeping. He said the union could not discuss strike when people were mourning, adding that the Federal Government that has been pressuring members to call off the strike since it began has shown understanding since the incident by relaxing pressure on the union.

He expressed optimism that the strike will be called off before the late Iyayi would be buried. Ogbinaka said the Federal Government has made some compromise and that another executive council meeting will soon be held to decide on the strike. He said that though the Federal Ministry of Education said the money demanded would be paid in January, ASUU will however call off the strike before then.
