August 15, 2014 – A member of the House of Representatives, Chief Yomi Ogunnusi has said that the House may not honour President Goodluck Jonathan’s request for $1 billion loan to fight insurgency in Nigeria and train military personnel.

Ogunnusi who spoke in Lagos said the request is not justified since billions of Naira has been allocated to fight insurgency in the 2014 budget. He said that going ahead to approve the request amounts to nothing but share waste of resources, adding that the executive arm of government must account for what has been allocated to defence before the request for loan can be honoured.

“We in the House are not giving that request seriousness because, that is not a priority and cannot be justified. There is a large budget for security and there should be proper account for that before we can talk of $1billion “, he said.

Ogunnusi who also provided scholarships to 100 students of secondary schools in his constituency, Ifako-Ijaiye attributed mass failure in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) to poor power supply which he said is a disincentive to learning, saying it had discouraged students from studying hard.

Ogunnusi, who is the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Finance said things will change when power supply improves in Nigeria. Only 31.28per cent of the 529,425 candidates that sat for 2014 WASSCE results had credits in five subjects including English and Mathematics.

The Lawmaker said “It is a known fact that students read and study better at night. But when there is no light, how do students read?

“I think the problem of mass failure is partly blamed for this power deficit because it is not encouraging students to study as hard as they should .

“In those days , we were using candles to study. But we cannot encourage students of nowadays to use candles because before you know it, they will have eye problems. “I strongly believe that if the power situation improves, it will impact positively on students` performance “
.
He said there was the need to strengthen the teaching of English and Mathematics in schools as a good number of students lacked competence in these two subjects. Ogunnusi called on parents to motivate their children to achieve academic excellence through hard work.
