MOSCOW – Embattled President of Syria,  Bashir Al Asad who has been toppled by rebel forces  has fled to Russia with members of his family

He fled shortly after the rebel forces allegedly backed by Turkey, Israel and the United States took over Syria, including Damascus.

The Kremlin has also confirmed his arrival. In a statement, Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov has said that President Vladimir Putin took the decision to grant asylum to Assad and his family.

He is however yet to have audience with the ousted President of Syria who was in charge for so many years and kept in power with support from Russia.

However, unconfirmed reports say that Turkey knew of the plan by rebel forces to overthrow Bashar al-Assad six months before the rebels stormed Damascus. But Turkish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that President Tayyip Erdogan tried to engage with Assad before the attack but says Turkey has no hand in the attack.

Meanwhile, former President of the Syrian Interim Government and president of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Anas al-Abdah is counting on Russia to get out of the power vacuum in Syria

He said  Syria needs all the help in this world and that more than half of the population  are either displaced or refugees. He said  about  80% of homes are destroyed and about 70% of the infrastructure  in deplorable state.

“We are in the business of maximizing the number of our friends and minimizing the number of our enemies and Russia is a very important player in this world, both regionally and internationally.”
