SCOTLAND YARD has declared war on the “silent menace” of illegal e-bikes as a high-tech blitz across the capital saw dozens of souped-up cycles snatched from the streets.
In a dramatic two-day sting, specialist officers used drones and undercover “interceptor” teams to hunt down riders using the vehicles to terrorise Londoners.
The operation, which focused on crime hotspots in the West End and Harlesden, resulted in 52 illegal e-bikes and mopeds being seized and hauled away to be crushed.
The crackdown turned the streets of London into a battlefield against “two-wheel enabled” crime. At Cambridge Circus in the heart of the West End, police bagged 38 bikes in just five hours.
High-tech drones buzzed overhead, feeding live intel to officers on the ground as they chased down suspects weaving through traffic.
One brazen rider in Harlesden sparked a high-speed pursuit after refusing to stop for officers. He was eventually cornered, arrested, and charged with dangerous driving.
But it’s not just about traffic offences. Cops revealed that these illegal machines are the “getaway vehicles of choice” for violent thugs. During the weekend blitz, officers nabbed:
A man armed with a lethal combat knife.
A dangerous fugitive wanted for a string of aggravated burglaries and violence against women.
A rider in Waterloo who tried to flee before being caught with a police-style baton.
Superintendent Luke Baldock, the Met’s e-bike kingpin, warned that the “ramp-up” in action is far from over.
”We understand Londoners’ concerns about how these bikes are being used for phone thefts and burglary,” he said. “That is why we are clearing thousands of these illegal vehicles from our streets.”
BACKGROUND: THE RISE OF THE “ROBO-BIKE”
The Met’s latest victory is part of a massive surge in enforcement as London battles a wave of “stealth crime.”
THE NUMBERS: A record 2,741 illegal e-bikes have been snatched across London over the last year.
CRIME DROPPING: The “precision” policing is working. In Westminster, neighbourhood crime has plummeted by a massive 28.4% this year.
THE LAW: Many e-bikes seized are “illegal conversions”—standard cycles fitted with powerful motors that allow them to reach speeds far exceeding the legal 15.5mph limit, essentially turning them into unregistered, uninsured motorcycles.
The crackdown follows “Community Crime-Fighting” events where over 2,500 residents told police that e-bike thugs were their number one concern.
