ABUJA — Indication emerged on Thursday that the Federal Government has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of Nigerian football administration following the country’s persistent failures to secure qualification for major regional, continental, and global tournaments.
The directive targets deep-seated structural defects within the sports sector, aiming to align Nigeria’s abundant grassroots talent with modern governance standards and international performance expectations.
Football remains Nigeria’s most unifying institution, cutting across ethnic, political, and generational lines. Despite producing world-class talent and maintaining one of the most passionate fanbases globally, the national teams have suffered series of setbacks in recent qualification campaigns. These continuous disappointments have drawn widespread public criticism and sparked calls for systemic restructuring.
In an official statement addressing the state of the sport, the presidency emphasized that piecemeal changes would no longer suffice to fix the systemic decay in the country’s sports management ecosystem.
”Football occupies a special place in our national life,” the statement read. “It brings Nigerians together across generations and communities, and our country has never lacked talent, passion, or support for the game. Yet, our results have too often fallen short of what Nigeria should expect.”
The administration highlighted the necessity of a total administrative shift, attributing recent international embarrassments directly to organizational failures rather than a lack of playing talent.
”I have therefore directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football following our repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental, and world tournaments. The problems are structural, and our response must address them,” the statement added.
Key Focus Areas of the Proposed Reforms
Governance & Accountability: Restructuring the administration of national sports bodies to enforce transparency and financial integrity.
Grassroots Infrastructure: Overhauling youth development pipelines and local league management to nurture domestic talent.
Technical Oversight: Establishing standardized, modern criteria for foreign and local coaching appointments across all national teams.
Stakeholders, analysts, and fans have long argued that poor logistics, administrative delays, and inadequate youth integration have hindered the Super Eagles and other national teams. The new directive is expected to trigger widespread changes across the Ministry of Sports Development and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the coming weeks.
