IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria -Lagos State Government has announced indefinite suspension of the activities of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at the seven (7) branches where violence have taken in place in Shogunle and Oshodi area of Lagos.
A number of people haven killed in the violence with several others injured. Announcing the suspension the Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Prince Lanre Elegushi listed the branches affected to include LoB ‘A’, ‘D’, ‘J’ and Oshodi ‘ A’ ‘B’ ‘C’ and ‘D’.
Acting Commissioner stated that extensive consultation with stakeholders and the determination to protect lives and properties while forestall further breakdown of law and order, were the reasons for the suspension.
Elegushi stated that during the period, a Committee comprising of the State Government officials and security operations will monitor the branches. he added that there will be no collection of any fees and tickets during the period.
The Commissioner noted that the suspension will persist until appropriate security report points to a condition of peace and tranquility adding too that steps are being taken to get all the warring parties to sheath their sword.
Elegushi warned that the State Government will not hesitate to extend the ban to any other branch will any violence erupts from union activities.
In his remarks, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr. Oluwole Edgal said an interim report on the investigation into the murder of Alhaji Raqas Bello alias Hamburger which led to the fracas, will be ready within the week.
He advised all to wait for the outcome of the report adding that arrests have been made and that Police will do its job well.
The DC (Ops) who refused to comment further on the investigation urged Union members to close rank and shun rumours, bickering insinuation and unverified information. He urged the leadership of NURTW to take charge of their men.
Also commenting the State Chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede reiterated his unions support for the decision of the State Government and pledged the comportment of his members.
He said the Union will continue to support the State Government in its bid to develop and bring progress to all parts of the State.
