JERUSALEM — Unverified video clips alleging that an Israeli cargo vessel loaded with weapons and heavy explosives capsized and was destroyed during a severe coastal storm spread rapidly across social media platforms on Thursday, highlighting how online disinformation and intelligence warfare continue to surge alongside physical military conflict in the Middle East.
The footage, shared by accounts with millions of followers across Telegram and X (formerly Twitter), purports to show a large cargo vessel turning over near a port terminal.
Accompanying captions claimed the vessel was carrying munitions destined for potential military actions against Iran when high winds and rough seas caused its cargo to shift, fatally destabilizing the ship.
However, international maritime security firms, open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysts, and naval tracking registries urged immediate caution regarding the claims.
Neither the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) nor global maritime watchdogs—including the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and private maritime security firm Ambrey—issued any incident report or distress alert corresponding to the alleged sinking.
