LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the tragic death of 23-year-old Faith Ajoke Alayande, a student at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus, Victoria Island, who reportedly died after falling from a four-storey hostel building on the campus grounds.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 7, 2026. According to preliminary reports, Alayande was found unresponsive within the hostel premises early in the morning after allegedly falling from the rooftop of the residential facility.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the Chief Matron of the hostel reported the incident to the Victoria Island Police Division at approximately 6:30 a.m.
Police officers dispatched to the scene assessed the environment and evacuated the body to a mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examination.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement authorities have initiated inquiries to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Police sources indicated that a written note was subsequently recovered from the student’s living quarters by a roommate and a relative, who had reportedly begun looking for her prior to the discovery. Authorities are currently examining the document as part of the broader inquiry into the incident.
Academic Background and Tributes
Faith Ajoke Alayande had recently completed her undergraduate degree in Law before gaining admission to the Nigerian Law School earlier this year to complete her professional legal training.
Reacting to the news, academic mentor Uchenna Marvin, who supervised Alayande during her university undergraduate studies, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Marvin recalled her academic dedication, particularly her research focus on Medical Law, where she examined legal and ethical dimensions surrounding end-of-life concepts, including the right to life and discussions surrounding bodily autonomy.
”Her death is deeply heartbreaking,” Marvin stated, describing her as a committed student with strong academic prospects.
The Nigerian Law School operates as an educational bar training institute for law graduates seeking admission to the Nigerian Bar. The Lagos Campus, located on Victoria Island, hosts hundreds of bar candidates annually who undergo an intensive vocational curriculum, culminating in the Bar Final examinations.
