KANO — The Kwankwasiyya Movement has broken its silence regarding the brewing political alliance between its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, the movement claimed that the prospect of a strategic partnership between the two political heavyweights has sent shockwaves through certain political quarters, particularly within the “Northern political establishment.”
According to the movement, the growing public discussion surrounding the Kwankwaso-Obi cooperation has been met with “selective attacks and misleading narratives” designed to discredit the former Kano State Governor.
The group argued that the backlash is a direct result of the “enormous national potential” such an alliance represents.
“For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging the long-standing regional divide in opposition politics,” the statement read.
The movement highlighted that while Kwankwaso commands a “disciplined and organic grassroots structure” in the North—specifically across the Northwest and Kano—Obi maintains massive appeal among the youth and urban voters in the South.
The group noted that the synergy between both leaders introduces a “new political equation” that transcends the traditional barriers of ethnicity and religion.
“Those attempting to dismiss this reality are not engaging in analysis; they are expressing political fear. The coming together of two leaders with proven electoral strength and massive youth appeal has the capacity to fundamentally reshape Nigeria’s democratic landscape.”
The Kwankwasiyya Movement further decried what it described as a “double standard” in the media and political commentary. It pointed out that while other political figures are praised for “strategic engagement,” Kwankwaso is often unfairly portrayed as “ambitious or disruptive” for seeking similar national realignments.
The statement emphasized that Kwankwaso’s relevance is not “manufactured by media houses” but rooted in years of grassroots service and the trust of millions of lower-income Nigerians.
Addressing the current state of the nation, the movement urged critics to pivot toward issue-based politics rather than “petty elite propaganda.”
“Nigeria today faces enormous economic, security, and governance challenges,” the group stated. “Any political understanding that seeks to unite Nigerians across regional and political lines should be encouraged rather than demonized.”
The movement reaffirmed its commitment to a democratic future built on mutual respect, asserting that the Kwankwasiyya Movement remains focused on providing a credible alternative for Nigerians seeking competent leadership and national inclusion.
