BRITAIN and France have been left holding the baby in a cut-down “Coalition of the Willing” after Europe’s heavy hitters sensationally ruled out sending boots to Ukraine.
In a hammer blow to Kyiv’s hopes for a massive security shield, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania have all flatly refused to deploy troops for any post-conflict mission.
The move leaves Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron as the only major leaders ready to put their soldiers on the line to guard a future peace.
The split emerged as a draft declaration for a multinational force was gutted of its most powerful promises.
Sources revealed that details of a post-conflict US role were “stripped” from the document before the final signing ceremony in Paris.
In a further snub to President Zelensky, the United States refused to sign the final pledge of security guarantees.
The document, which was intended to be a show of global strength, was ultimately signed only by the tiny remaining “Coalition of the Willing.”
As the deal wobbled, Donald Trump issued a blunt warning to Kyiv, revealing he has demanded strict iron-clad promises from the war-torn nation.
”I told Ukraine not to cheat,” Trump said.
“I said, just don’t cheat. And we have a signed agreement that Ukraine can’t cheat.” Trump claimed that Kyiv had already “violated the agreement many times,” casting a shadow over future American support.
The fallout comes as Ukraine desperately seeks long-term protection to prevent a fresh Russian onslaught once the current fighting stops.
While the UK and France have pledged to establish “military hubs” and help rebuild Ukraine’s air and sea power, the absence of the US and other European powers has sparked fears that the security plan lacks the teeth to deter Vladimir Putin.
With Washington stepping back and Europe’s neighbors backing away from the front line, the “robust” security net promised to Ukraine is looking increasingly like a two-man safety net.
