FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT IN BAUCHI
IT was a case of all glitter and no gold at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium yesterday as the Nigeria Premier Football League’s (NPFL) brightest stars failed to find their shooting boots.
Despite the pre-match hype, Wikki Tourists and Barau FC served up a 0-0 “Bauchi Bore-draw” that left fans wanting their money back and managers pulling their hair out.
For Wikki, a team desperately clawing to escape the relegation quicksand, this wasn’t just a draw—it was a missed golden opportunity.
All eyes were on the attacking talent on display, but the expected fireworks turned out to be damp squibs. Wikki’s forward line, usually so reliable on home turf, looked like they had left their magic in the dressing room. Every time the Tourists threatened to break the deadlock, they were met by a Barau defense that was as stubborn as a London mule.
Barau, the league’s “New Boys” who have been punching well above their weight this season, seemed content to play the role of party poopers. While they sat comfortably in the mid-table sun before kickoff, their stars lacked the killer instinct to snatch all three points on the road.
If there were any stars to be found, they were wearing gloves. Both goalkeepers pulled off a string of “how did he do that?” saves to ensure the scoreline remained a big fat zero.
The Tourists’ faithful roared their team on, but as the clock ticked down, the atmosphere turned from expectant to exasperated. Wikki now sits precariously in 17th place—just a whisker above the drop zone—while Barau maintains their top-ten status but misses the chance to climb into the European-chasing pack.
One thing is for sure: if these two teams want to reach the heights their “star” billing suggests, they’ll need to find the back of the net sooner rather than later. For now, it’s back to the drawing board in Bauchi.
