LAGOS — Tension is brewing in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State following allegations that officials claiming to represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) have threatened to demolish a building housing the office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) unless the party’s banner is removed.
The development was made public by NDC chieftain Obiasogu David, who expressed deep concern over what he described as growing political intolerance and intimidation targeting opposition activities in the state.
According to David, the trouble began when the landlord of the property instructed the NDC Local Government Chairman to pull down the only promotional banner displayed outside the party’s office.
The directive was delivered through the property’s caretaker, an elderly woman, who was dispatched to remove the banner while NDC officials were holding a meeting inside the venue.
Party members present firmly resisted the attempt, leading to a prolonged and heated exchange. Confronted by the opposition from party members, the caretaker reportedly softened her stance and disclosed that the landlord was acting under severe pressure and threats of building demolition from individuals identifying as APC officials if the banner was not taken down by Tuesday.
NDC members at the scene questioned the selective enforcement, pointing out that banners belonging to other tenants and political entities remain displayed on the same building without interference. Despite the caretaker leaving the venue with a warning that the ultimatum remains in place, party representatives insisted the banner would remain up.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across political circles, with opposition leaders and civil society figures tagged on social media to highlight the escalating standoff in Nigeria’s largest municipal area.
As at the time of filing this report, the banner remains in place while party members maintain their stance against the directive.
