PORT HARCOURT – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has stepped in to provide a vital lifeline to the people of Ogu-Bolo in Rivers State, delivering a massive haul of relief materials to families reeling from the aftermath of devastating floods.
The intervention comes as a direct response to recent natural disasters that saw homes submerged, farmlands decimated, and the local economy plunged into turmoil.
Presenting the materials on behalf of the NDDC Managing Director, Engr. Jeremiah Onolejoloni (Director II of Education, Health and Social Services) told community members that the commission remains “unwavering” in its commitment to the region’s most vulnerable.
”This event is not just about the distribution of palliatives,” Engr. Onolejoloni said. “It is another way to reaffirm government presence, compassion, and solidarity with families experiencing economic hardship. It reflects the belief in the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President.”
The NDDC partnered with the Derek and Davia Foundation, a non-governmental organization, to ensure essential food items and household goods reached those in desperate need.
The relief effort was met with deep gratitude from local leadership. The paramount ruler of Ogu-Bolo, Chief Joachim Amachiri, hailed the NDDC for providing “succour” during a dark chapter for his people.
He pledged that the community would continue to support the commission’s development programmes in exchange for their proactive response to the crisis.
The NDDC boss urged residents to ensure the items are shared equitably and to maintain peace within the kingdom.
The sentiment was echoed by Dr. George Smile, representing the programme’s consultants, who confirmed that this is just the beginning. Plans are already in motion to collaborate with development partners to extend similar relief packages to neighbouring communities also affected by the floods.
As the waters recede, the NDDC’s message remains clear: the commission is determined to be the first port of call whenever disaster strikes the Niger Delta.
