STUTTGART went into overdrive yesterday as they dismantled a shell-shocked Hamburger SV 4-0, with German internationals Maximilian Mittelstädt and Chris Führich putting on a clinic in the Swabian sunshine.
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side didn’t just win; they delivered a statement of intent that echoed across the Bundesliga, reclaiming third spot and leaving the visitors from the north looking like a team stuck in second gear.
The onslaught began in the 22nd minute when the metronomic Angelo Stiller showed he has a clinical edge to match his passing range. After a slick exchange involving Jamie Leweling, Stiller arrived late in the box to bury a first-time left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Hamburg, desperate to avoid another season of “what ifs,” tried to play out from the back, but they were ruthlessly punished for their bravery. On 32 minutes, Stiller turned provider-by-proxy, pouncing on a loose pass before the ball was funneled through Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirović to find Chris Führich. The winger, who has been in scintillating form all season, made no mistake, doubling the lead with a finish of pure composure.
If the first half was a lesson, the second was a masterclass led by Man of the Match Maximilian Mittelstädt. The left-back was everywhere, marauding forward with the kind of energy that has made him a certain starter for the national team.
In the 56th minute, Mittelstädt decided to take matters into his own hands—or rather, his boots. Receiving a pass from Führich on the edge of the area, he unleashed a powerful long-range effort that took a slight deflection before screaming into the net. It was a goal that “killed the contest,” according to onlookers, and he was inches away from a second later on when a curling free-kick rattled the crossbar.
Even a rare miss from the spot by Deniz Undav in the 82nd minute couldn’t dampen the mood at the MHP Arena. The hosts simply refused to take their foot off the gas.
The final flourish came four minutes from time when substitute Bilal El Khannouss got in on the act. Fed by Tiago Tomás, the youngster slotted home to make it four, completing a rout that was as much about Stuttgart’s brilliance as it was about Hamburg’s defensive fragility.
As the final whistle blew, the “Hoeneß Revolution” showed no signs of slowing down. With only five games remaining, the Champions League anthem feels closer than ever for the Stuttgart faithful, while Hamburg are left to lick their wounds after a afternoon they’ll want to forget in a hurry.
