Scores Killed as Military Engage Boko Haram in Air Strikes

July 15, 2015 – Twenty-six people were killed when the radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram stormed Dille village, Borno State, northeast Nigeria, forcing the military to deploy warplane to repel the attackers, local residents and a security sources have said.
Sources say the attackers fired on inhabitants and burned homes and churches.

“I counted 26 corpses yesterday evening,” one of the residents, Dauda Illiya, told Reuters. “The pilot was just spraying bullets anywhere … People were running here and there. Many people were injured from the bullets,” said a local man, Suleiman Haruna.

Most of the deaths occurred during the raid but cannon fire from the government jet also killed at least six civilians – four women and two children, residents said.
Defence Headquarters however confirmed the incident on Tweeter saying that utmost caution was ensured during the strikes, adding that the militants are known to mingle with the civilians to escape being hit.

“Air Operations conducted to repel attack of Terrorists in Dille & environ on Monday was conducted in line with standard practice”, the Defence Headquarter said on Tweeter.
