STARS, stripes, and a whole lot of strikes! Real Salt Lake (RSL) turned America First Field into a house of pain for San Diego FC on Saturday night, galloping to a clinical 4-2 victory that proved the Utah side are the real deal in 2026.
While the London rain might be falling, things are heating up in the MLS as RSL extended their unbeaten streak to six matches, fueled by a masterclass from their star-studded frontline.
It took all of five minutes for the “Moon” to rise in Sandy. Diego Luna, RSL’s mercurial playmaker, didn’t wait for an invitation, pouncing on a shocking error from San Diego keeper Duran Ferree to slot home the opener.
But Luna wasn’t done.
Just sixty seconds later, the young star turned architect, whipped a “Beckham-esque” cross into the box for Sergi Solans to double the lead. San Diego were reeling before they’d even broken a sweat.
If Luna was the brains, Solans was the brawn. The striker bagged himself a brilliant brace, heading home his second in the 37th minute after Marcus Ingvartsen had briefly given the visitors hope.
The knockout blow came just before the interval. New boy Morgan Guilavogui—the man RSL fans have been desperate to see find his feet—finally opened his MLS account.
Assisted by that man Solans again, Guilavogui buried a low drive to make it 4-1, effectively ending the contest as a spectacle before the halftime oranges were even sliced.
San Diego showed a flicker of life in the second half when Anders Dreyer dusted himself off to convert a 66th-minute penalty, but the mountain was simply too high to climb.
Despite a late flurry of corners and a frantic effort from Lewis Morgan, RSL’s veteran keeper Rafael Cabral stood tall to ensure there was no late drama.
For San Diego, it’s back to the drawing board after three straight defeats. For Real Salt Lake, the sky—and perhaps the Supporters’ Shield—is the limit.
”We played with a swagger tonight. When Luna and Solans are in that mood, there isn’t a defense in this league that can catch them,” said one jubilant home fan.
