By Our Man in the States

THE WASATCH FRONT was treated to a masterclass in attacking football as Real Salt Lake’s rising stars turned America First Field into a house of pain for MLS newcomers San Diego FC.

In a high-octane 4-2 victory that had the London scouts reaching for their notebooks, it was the Spanish sensation Sergi Solans and the irrepressible Diego Luna who stole the show, proving that the future of the American game has a distinctly European flair.
Luna’s Lightning Start

The game was barely five minutes old when the “Moon” rose over Utah. Diego Luna, the creative heartbeat of this Salt Lake side, pounced on a defensive lapse to fire the hosts ahead. Before the visitors could even draw breath, the lead was doubled.

Luna turned provider, whipping in a cross that found the head of Sergi Solans, who buried it with the clinical precision of a seasoned La Liga veteran.

To their credit, San Diego—led by the experience of former Premier League target Marcus Ingvartsen—refused to crumble.

Ingvartsen pulled one back in the 14th minute with a thunderous left-footed strike that reminded the 20,000-strong crowd why he’s the main man for the expansion side.
But this was Solans’ night.

The Spaniard, a revelation since arriving via the SuperDraft, restored the two-goal cushion before the break, latching onto a ball from the impressive Zavier Gozo to make it 3-1.
