MOSCOW – Russia has formerly recognized breakaway republic of Donetsk and Luhansk, in Eastern Ukraine as independent nations. President Vladimir Putin made the revelation in his national broadcast on Russian Television.
Putin, who used the occasion to trace the history of Russia, said Ukraine was created by Russia, adding that it remains anintegral part of Russian history. He said the current militarization of Ukraine border is aimed at addressing three principal things – not allowing further expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, stopping attacks on Russian border and going back to the agreement signed between NATO and Russia.
He said NATO expansion into Ukraine has created capability to attack Russia, adding that Russia has full right to do whatever it takes to protect itself.
“ NATO expansion has created capability to strike Russia and dominate Russian airspace. So we reacted, they have three key aims, not allowing further expansion of NATO, not to have attacks on Russia border, and going back to agreement signed between Russia and NATO”, he said.
Putin explained that the economy of Ukraine has weakened, creating so much unemployment, adding that the weak state of the economy paved the way for Western influence, culture and corruption.
He said many in Ukraine don’t have enough money to pay for gas and necessities of life because the money has been put into private pockets. Putin alleged that Ukraine discriminates against speakers in Russia, forcing policy of assimilation.
He said that with the support of the United States and other western nations, including NATO, Ukraine has built its own nuclear capability including air support from US and NATO warship, a development, which he said is unacceptable. He said NATO’s action contravenes its avowed aim as a peaceful entity.
“Now, they try to make accusation about military and actions of Russia”, he said, adding that Russia has kept its own side of the NATO agreement that ended the cold war but that what Russia got was deception, one after another, empty promises.
“Time after time, they tell us that NATO is a peace loving organisation, but we were told that Ukraine will not be part of NATO but everything turned to be empty words. Everything turned to be quite the contrary, previous promises about NATO not t spreading east turned out to be empty words”, he said.
According to him, NATO has as one of its principle that every state has the choice to chose its security, and that nothing has changed.
“They are trying to blackmail us again with sanctions, I think they will carry them out any way, an excuse for the sanctions will always be found , fabricated, the aim is to restrain the development of Russia, they did it before without any formal reason”, Putin said.
He described what happened in 2014 as aggressive nationalism. We have to speak in our own language, how long, Russia has done everything for its own security, to carryout security council resolution, but all of this has just being ignored. This led to the coup in 2014 and violence bloodshed and lawlessness.
“Hence I decided to take the decision to recognise the sovereignty of independent state of Donetsk and Luhansk. The assembly of Russia has taken very important decision on it. And those who are destined to stop the military action have a responsibility to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine”, he said.
