    Richard Montgomery replaces Catriona Laing as British HC to Nigeria

    LAGOS, Nigeria – Dr Richard  Huge Montgomery CMG has been appointed as  the British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    He  succeeds Ms Catriona Laing CB who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment. Mr Montgomery will take up his appointment in  April 2023.

    Dr Richard Montgomery is married  to Naheed Bilgrami. He has two children. Prior to this posting, he was UK Executive Director of the World Bank Group between 2018 and 2022. Between 2015 and 2018, he was Director Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories (AsCOT) Division at the Department of International Development, DFID.

    Between 2013 and 2015,  he was Islamabad Counsellor(Development) and Head of Office, DFID, Pakistan but from 2009 to 2013 he was Counsellor (Development) and Head of Office, DFID, Nigeria. But before then, from 2006 to 2009, he was DFID Deputy Director and Head of Corporate  Human Resources and  Head of Security,  East Kilbridge.

    Prior that he was DFID Deputy Team Leader, Top Management Group between 2005 and 2006. He was also Deputy Head, DFID, Zambia. Between 1999 and  2002, he was Senior Social Development Adviser, DFID Bangladesh and Social Development Adviser, DFID India between 1996 and 1999.

    Between 1993 and 1996, he worked as a lecturer at in International Development Centre for Development Studies at Swansea University. Before then, he was at the Manchester  University, Research  Institute for Development  Policy and Management from 1992 to 1993.

    Dr Richard Montgomery  also worked as sociologist at the GKW Consult Mannheim  and prior  to that from 1988 to1991, he was  at the University of Cambridge where he obtained his PhD in Social Anthropology .
