NIGERIA is on the hunt for its next global superstars after a week of high-octane sporting drama in the heart of the Niger Delta.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has thrown his full weight behind the Niger Delta Games, branding the competition a “powerful instrument” for national unity and a golden ticket for the country’s youth.
The President’s “Renewed Hope” agenda was on full display at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Edo State, as the second edition of the games wrapped up in spectacular fashion.
Represented by National Sports Commission boss, Hon. Bukola Olopade, the President urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to keep the investment coming.
”Sports remain one of the greatest tools for national unity and youth empowerment,” the President declared. “Beyond medals and trophies, this is about creating pathways to global recognition.”
The atmosphere was electric as host team Edo State pulled off a stunning upset, dethroning defending champions Bayelsa to finish top of the table.
Edo swept the competition with a massive haul of 111 medals, including 52 Golds. Delta State followed closely as runners-up with 102 medals, while former kings Bayelsa were forced to settle for third with 79.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, hailed the “world-class” experience, while NDDC Chairman Chiedu Ebie predicted that the talents unearthed this week would soon be flying the Nigerian flag at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.
NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, confirmed the games are “here to stay,” but issued a firm warning to the rising stars.
”Continue to train, challenge yourselves, and believe,” he told the athletes. However, Local Organising Committee Chairman Evangelist Solomon Ogba added a dose of reality, telling the youngsters to stay clean: “Stay away from drugs and age falsification. True success comes from discipline.”
With the Niger Delta region already producing over 60% of Nigeria’s international athletes, this year’s fiesta proves the production line of talent is stronger than ever.
