BRUNO FERNANDES delivered a breathtaking captain’s performance to pull Manchester United out of early trouble and inspire a roaring 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at a rain-soaked Old Trafford.
Following last week’s shocking opening-day setback at Hull City, pressure was mounting on Michael Carrick’s men to respond in emphatic fashion. Yet it was Ipswich Town who stunned the Stretford End on 29 minutes.
Wing-wizard Abdul Fatawu cut down the flank before setting up Leif Davis, who silenced the home crowd by beating Senne Lammens with a clinical, composed finish into the corner.
United needed their big-game superstar to step into the spotlight, and PFA Player of the Year Fernandes answered the call on 40 minutes.
Capitalising on a costly slip from Marcelino Núñez, summer signing Matheus Cunha strode into open space before threading a precise pass to Fernandes. The skipper took one touch to set himself and unleashed a venomous left-footed drive past tall Ipswich keeper Kjell Scherpen to level the scores.
The second half turned into absolute bedlam as United turned up the heat. On 56 minutes, Harry Maguire brought down a clearance and unleashed a strike from the edge of the box that took a cruel deflection off defender Jacob Greaves and trickled past a helpless Scherpen into the net to give the Red Devils the lead.
Just five minutes later, Cunha’s electric direct running drew a desperate foul inside the box from Greaves. Up stepped Fernandes, who paused during his trademark stuttered run-up to send Scherpen diving the wrong way and stroke home his second goal of the match.
The Portuguese maestro completed his stunning hat-trick on 68 minutes. After Marcus Rashford crossed into the penalty box, chaotic blocked efforts from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo saw the ball ricochet into Fernandes’ path. He calmly cushioned the ball with his first touch before stroking a close-range finish into the bottom corner to send Old Trafford wild.
The star man was not done yet, turning creator on 82 minutes. Picking up possession inside the opposition half, Fernandes floated a millimeter-perfect long pass over the Ipswich defense for Mbeumo.
The Cameroonian forward smartly lifted a delicate chip over the rushing Scherpen; the ball clipped the underside of the crossbar before bouncing over the line for United’s fifth.
Substitute Chuba Akpom tapped home a 91st-minute consolation for Ipswich after Lisandro Martínez lost possession, but it did nothing to spoil Carrick’s afternoon.
Statistically, Manchester United were totally dominant throughout the match, firing an astonishing total of 33 goal attempts with 12 shots on target, while holding 64 percent of ball possession. United completed 512 passes with an impressive 88 percent pass accuracy and earned 9 corners.
By contrast, Ipswich Town registered 7 total shots, 3 shots on target, and held 36 percent of possession while giving away 14 fouls in a stormy contest.
Old Trafford witnessed a true masterclass from captain Fernandes, who bagged three goals, one assist, and a match-winning performance for the ages.
