August 30, 2014 – Prime Minister of Lesotho, Thomas Motsoahae Thabane has escaped to South Africa to avoid being killed by the military whom he accused of staging a coup.

He also said he will return to Lesotho when he is sure of not being killed by the military and that the military acts outside his instruction who is commander-in-chief of the military.

“I have been removed from control not by the people but by the armed forces, and that is illegal,” he told the BBC’s Newshour programme. I came into South Africa this morning and I will return as soon as my life is not in danger. I will not go back to Lesotho to get killed,” he said.

He also told South African ENCA television station that it is pure military coup. “It is a military coup because it is led by the military. And the military are outside the instructions of the commander in chief, who is myself,” he said.
The Prime Minister escaped following early morning gun fire in Maseru, capital of Lesotho.

“We are taking concrete steps to nip it in the bud,” he added and that the regional Southern African Development Community (SADC) was addressing the situation.
