ENUGU — Authorities of the Nigeria Police Force have detained a serving officer, Inspector Kwuje Samson, following his viral public disclosure alleging severe systemic decay, poor welfare conditions, and internal institutional rot within the police force.
Samson is currently being held at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID) in Enugu State, where he is reportedly undergoing interrogation.
The officer recently made headlines across social media after appearing in interviews where he spoke candidly about his struggles after nearly 24 years in service. In the emotional video, Inspector Samson revealed that rank-and-file officers face overwhelming economic hardship, inadequate living conditions, dilapidated barracks accommodation, and a lack of official equipment and uniforms.
”I know the offence I am committing. I know the punishment—whether it is reduction in rank, confinement to barracks, or whatever,” Samson said during the viral interview. “We have been obeying the regulations, but for so long, that has not helped us. Hardship made me even contemplate suicide, but I decided to speak out for the over 200,000 officers who are suffering in silence.”
He further appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Police Service Commission to look beyond high-level assurances from police hierarchy and directly address the living conditions of serving personnel.
Under the Police Act and the Police Service Regulations, serving officers are strictly prohibited from granting unauthorized media interviews, making public political statements, or airing grievances publicly without official clearance from internal public relations channels. Violations are routinely classified as acts of indiscipline, insubordination, or breach of internal security codes.
However, Samson’s detention has stirred fresh public debate regarding the treatment of whistleblowers and the long-standing welfare crisis affecting lower-cadre officers in Nigeria.
Over the years, the Nigeria Police Force has faced persistent criticism over sub-par remuneration, inadequate housing, and out-of-pocket expenses borne by personnel for essential operational gear. While police leadership has repeatedly promised structural reforms, increased budgetary allocations, and enhanced welfare packages, rank-and-file officers frequently allege that these benefits rarely reach the grassroots level.
Civil rights advocates and legal practitioners have expressed concern over Samson’s arrest, urging police leadership to address the core welfare issues raised rather than punishing the messenger.
As of press time, the Force Public Relations Department and the Enugu State Police Command have not issued an official statement detailing the specific charges filed against Inspector Samson or the timeline for his prospective appearance before a police disciplinary court or regular tribunal.
