    Paul Gicheru detained for allegedly corrupting ICC witnesses

    HAGUE, Netherlands – The International Criminal Court, ICC  now has Mr. Paul Gicheru in custody. Paul Gicheru who allegedly influenced ICC witness corruptly has surrendered to ICC, following arrest warrant issued on by the ICC pre-trial chamber II.

    “Today, 2 November 2020, Mr Paul Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of The Netherlands pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “the Court”)”, the ICC said.

     Mr Gicheru, a lawyer formerly based in Kenya, is suspected of offences against the administration of justice consisting in corruptly influencing witnesses of the Court.

    The Court, through the Registry services, submitted a cooperation request to the Dutch authorities for the arrest and surrender of Mr Gicheru to the Court upon completion of the necessary national arrest proceedings.

    The arrest warrant against Mr Gicheru and Philip Kipkoech Bett was issued under seal on 10 March 2015 and unsealed on 10 September 2015. Philip Kipkoech Bett is not yet in ICC custody.
