ALGIERS, Algeria – The Algerian parliament has named Speaker of parliament, Hon. Abdelkader Bensalah as Interim President. He was selected following the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika as President of Algeria.
He will be in power for 90 days during which election will be held to elect a new president. He is not eligible for the election.
His appointment has sparked series of protest around Algeria, with chants of “Bensalah go” rocking the streets across the city.
Abdelaziz Bouteflika was born 2 March 1937. He is 82 and currently cannot move around without the aid of a wheelchair forcing the military to demand for his removal. His successor, Abdelkader Bensalah is also elderly.
“I am required by national duty to take on this heavy responsibility of steering a transition that will allow the Algerian people to exercise their sovereignty.
“I want to work towards fulfilling the interests of the people,”he said, adding that “It’s a great responsibility that the constitution demands of me.”
