OSOGBO – Ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Osun State, Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly condemned the recent inflammatory comments and threat-laden rhetoric attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi, describing them as alarming, unacceptable, and capable of inciting electoral violence.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obi expressed deep regret over the remarks made by the high-ranking National Assembly lawmaker, emphasizing that public officers hold a solemn constitutional and moral duty to preserve peace, uphold democratic norms, and foster national unity rather than instil fear in the electorate.
Obi warned that deploying political intimidation, threats, or harassment in the build-up to the polls severely undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process and disrespects the people of Osun State.
”Elections are meant to be a celebration of democratic franchise—a peaceful exercise through which citizens freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment, or coercion,” Obi stated.
“Resorting to threats of force or disruption undermines the integrity of our electoral process, disrespects the electorate, and threatens the fragile peace of the state.”
Addressing the lawmaker directly, the former Anambra State Governor demanded an immediate retraction and a public apology from Senator Fadahunsi to the citizens of Osun.
”I respectfully demand that Senator Fadahunsi retract these harmful statements and tender an apology to the peaceful people of Osun State,” he added.
Obi called on all political leaders, party loyalists, and election stakeholders across party lines to exercise maximum restraint, moderate their language, and recommit themselves to democratic decorum as the state prepares for the ballot.
He further charged relevant security agencies to maintain close surveillance on political actors issuing incendiary remarks, ensuring equal protection for voters, election officials, and citizens throughout the electoral cycle.
Reaffirming his confidence in the democratic process, Obi reminded political actors that sovereignty belongs strictly to the electorate, declaring that no individual should subvert the public will through fear or coercion.
He urged Osun residents to remain calm, peaceful, and resolute in exercising their civic duties, maintaining that getting elections right remains a crucial step toward building a “New Nigeria.”
