LAGOS, Nigeria – A Community Leader in the South East Ozo Dim Bunty Onuigbo has called for immediate withdrawal of police personnels attached to non-government functionaries.
Onuigbo alleged that the major causes of insecurity in the area are due to individuals going about with security personnels leaving others with nobody to protect them.
According to him, it is wrong to give non government functionaries over ten policemen each, thereby depleting the number of officers and men charged with the task of fighting insecurity.
He stated that the South East geopolitical zone is under the deadly bondage of the unknown gunmen and since this week alone Ebony, Enugu and Abia states are witnessing killings in large numbers.
Onuigbo noted that the policemen that should fight the insecurity have been deployed to some bunch of civilians who are not even government functionaries and nobody to protect the poor.
“This was part of our resolution in our last meeting of South East Ozo title holders because how can one have ten or more policemen deployed to a man while the rest of us in Igbo land have no police to protect us ?
We have already petitioned the new Inspector General of Police to withdraw the officers and men attached to them and deploy them to major insecurity flashpoints to stop these killings” he said.
Onuigbo further blamed the governors of the South East for dissolving the community and village vigilante groups noting that as a result of this development the group are now being used by the unknown gunmen to fight the people.
He said ,”How can our governors dissolve those local village vigilante groups and set up their own and those working for them don’t even know the communities well and cannot indeed identify those gunmen?”
Onuigbo also stated that those state governors who have not conducted local government elections should as a matter of agency commence the process to avoid further insecurity.
According to him, with elected Council Chairmen and Councillors funds for the fight against insecurity would come from the council areas who would pay the village security operatives who know the hide outs of those gunmen.
