AWKA, Anambra – Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State chapter. Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu has called on the state government to conduct local government elections in the state.
Odogwu made the call during his opening remark at the October general meeting of NUJ held at its Secretariat, Awka on Thursday .
He said that it was regrettable that there are no evidence of democratic dividends at all the local government councils in the state.
According to him, there is need for the grassroots to have a feel of democracy in the state. Odogwu said that the people at the grassroots should be given the opportunity to participate in the democracy.
He called on the media to hold the government accountable to ensure that good governance trickle down to local government areas of the state.
According to him, the media in the state should uphold it’s core mandate of holding government accountable at all time to enthrone quality governance at all times.
“If you visit all the local government council in the state, there is nothing to show that there is any presence of government activity.
We must hold the government accountable as our core mandate. We must live up our calling as the eyes, ears and mirror of the society” he said
