A COWARDLY driver who mowed down a delivery worker at more than double the speed limit before fleeing the scene has been jailed.
Mayan Hirani, 26, left tragic Mohammed Furuk Ahmed with “catastrophic injuries” after smashing into him in his powerful Range Rover.
A court heard how innocent Mr Ahmed had parked up his car to make a food delivery in Ilford, east London, on Saturday, March 16 last year.
But as the dedicated worker crossed the road, Hirani’s speeding 4×4 ploughed into him. Crash investigators revealed Hirani was tearing down the road at between 64mph and 68mph—in a strict 30mph zone.
Instead of stopping to help the dying man, heartless Hirani stepped on the gas and sped away into the night.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Ahmed tragically died in hospital the following day.
Hirani thought he had gotten away with the deadly hit-and-run, but top Met detectives launched a massive manhunt.
Using CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, officers tracked the damaged Range Rover down to a garage in east London.
Faced with overwhelming evidence, Hirani, of Chigwell, was forced to admit he was behind the wheel.
Yesterday, at Woolwich Crown Court, Hirani was sentenced to six years and nine months behind bars after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.
He was also banned from the roads for five years and must take an extended re-test if he ever wants to drive again.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Tristan Hunter said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Ahmed’s family and loved ones, who continue to live with the devastating consequences of his death.
”While no sentence can undo the pain caused by Mr Ahmed’s passing, I hope this outcome provides some measure of justice for his family and demonstrates our commitment to holding dangerous drivers accountable.
