Nigeria 2015: INEC May Shift Election by Six Weeks

February 7, 2015 – Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega has kept Nigerians guessing whether or not it will go ahead to hold presidential elections as scheduled on February 14, 2015.

Journalists who besieged the head office of the commission in Abuja were kept waiting for very long hours awaiting the decision of the electoral umpire.

INEC started the day with a meeting with political party leaders, later security agencies, civil societies and lastly Resident Electoral Commissioners (IREC)s.

Opinions were however divided among members of the political parties that attended the meeting. While some favoured postpone, others led by the All Progressive Congress(APC) are of the view that the umpire should go ahead with the elections as scheduled.

Parties who attended the meeting however told journalists that INEC had requested a shift in date based on security situation in the country and the need to get more Permanent Voter Card(PVC) into the hands of Nigerians.

There are however indications that the election will be postponed by six weeks and probably to hold by March 28, 2015.
