NIGERIA icon Wilfred Ndidi is in mourning after his father was tragically killed in a horror road accident.
Sunday Ndidi, the father of the Super Eagles captain, passed away after being struck by a car in the town of Umunede, Delta State.
The devastating news comes just weeks after Wilfred, 29, led his country to a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the tragedy today, expressing their “shock and sadness” at the loss.
NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi led the tributes, saying: “This is very sad. The player just gave his very best to the nation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
”He had returned to his club with great motivation and high hopes, and also to help the Super Eagles reach new heights this year.
”We are really shocked at the moment. We earnestly pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. Sunday Ndidi and pray that God will comfort our team captain and his family.”
It is understood that Sunday Ndidi was hit by a vehicle near Agbor in the southern region of Nigeria.
The Leicester City legend—currently playing in Turkey—is said to be devastated by the news. Wilfred has often spoken of his family’s influence on his rise from the streets of Lagos to the heights of the Premier League.
The football world has already begun rallying around the midfielder, who is a beloved figure in both English and Nigerian football.
