    NAMed seeks TETFUND support for academic journal publications

    LAGOS, Nigeria – In its bid to continue its lofty goals in the medical and academic landscape, the Nigerian Academy of Medicine (NAMed), recently made a passionate request from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for financial assistance for the publishing of its proceedings, journals, memoirs, transactions and other publications as may be found desirable and in tune with its mandate as enunciated Article 1: f of the organisation.

    Prof. Samuel Ohaegbulam, President of NAMed, made this plea when he, on .Wednesday, July 3, led a delegation of the Board of Trustees of the Board of Trustees on a courtesy visit on Arc. Sunny Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFund in his Maitama, Abuja office.

    The President who was accompanied on the visit by Professor Tolu Odugbemi, NAMed Board of Trustees chairman, and Professor Oluwole Atoyebi, Secretary of the Academy, as well as some others, explained that the Academy owned its own Journal, (Journal of Nigerian Academy of Medicine), which Publishing had been compounded due to USA Dollars unstable exchange rates and therefore prayed for TETFund intervention in funding the Journal.

    Said Prof. Ohaegbulam: “In pursuit of the lofty goals of the Nigerian Academy of Science, we humbly wish to place on your table a request for financial assistance to publish such proceedings, journals, memoirs, transactions and other publications as may be found desirable and in tune with our Article 1: f.

    “This is therefore a major area that the Academy needs your support as we are aware that TETFund supports Academic Journals and it is our belief that our Journal deserves annual subventions”.

    “The Nigerian Academy of Medicine is unique as it comprises Academics in Medicine and Dentistry, who have made their marks in the professions and can serve as part of a national resource of excellence and expertise in medical sciences and healthcare”.

    Speaking further during the visit, Prof. Ohaegbulam listed the objectives of the academy and noted the uniqueness in their quest for medical and health deliveries excellence.

    The NAMed delegation noted with great admiration the impactful interventions in most Nigerian tertiary institutions and particularly the Trust Fund’s investments in modern medical equipment in tertiary hospitals and funding of medical research.

    The NAMed president also revealed that there were stringent requirements to be met before a nominee for Fellowship could get elected, noting that the academy remained the apex organisation in the health sphere with only 159 Fellows in the various Specialties.

    Responding, Tetfund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, commended the initiatives and efforts of the Academy, noting that their objectives speak volumes about how much resources of intelligence and expertise they have brought to bare on the country’s health sector.

    He affirmed to the Academy, of TETFund’s continued impactful interventions to all Tertiary Education institutions, including the Tertiary health institutions, assuring that his office would positively look into the Academy’s requests.

    The Nigerian Academy of Medicine (NAMed) is a body registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), as an independent, dynamic and innovative national resource of excellence and expertise in medical sciences and healthcare.
