SOLINGEN – Margot Friedländer, a 102-year-old Holocaust survivor, has received an honorary award for her commitment to humanity and tolerance, the broadcaster RTL announced on Friday.

Friedländer still visits school classes to share her life story as a Jew during the Nazi era. She received the “Brigitte Award 2024” honorary prize in Berlin – the first time the award was presented. Brigitte is a well-known women’s publication in Germany that is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. It is part of RTL’s portfolio.

Earlier this week, the film from public broadcaster ZDF “Ich bin! Margot Friedländer” (I am! Margot Friedländer), which combines re-enactments with historical material and interviews with Friedländer, received the German Television Award.

Meanwhile, the suspect behind a deadly knife attack at a festival in the western German city of Solingen in August  is said to have bought the weapon at a local store only hours before the stabbings.

Sources told dpa the interior minister for the state of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), which includes Solingen, provided that detail during a closed-door briefing to state lawmakers.

The attack in the city of Solingen, which left three dead and several more wounded, shocked the country. The suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian man, was captured the next day after a massive manhunt.

According to sources, NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul described security camera footage showing the suspect in the store hours before the August 23 stabbing rampage. Reul said he can be seen using a cellphone, which police are still hoping to locate.

Another cellphone recovered by authorities had been destroyed, Reul said, according to dpa’s sources.

The minister also revealed new details in the confidential meeting about a confession video that had been distributed by the Islamic State terror group, which claimed credit for the attack.

The video had in fact been filmed in Solingen, although how it was obtained by Islamic State remains under investigation, sources told dpa.

The suspect, identified only as Issa Al H. according to German privacy rules, is being held in custody on suspicion of murder as the investigation continues.
