BUENOS AIRES – A man has been detained in Buenos Aires over his attempt to kill Vice President  of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez  de Kirchner.

Vice President  Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was President of Argentina from 2007 to 2015.

Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was greeting supporters outside her home when an armed man emerged from the crowd , pointing his short gun at the Vice President, pulled the trigger at short range but the gun jammed refusing to fire.

The attacker, a 35 year old Brazilian has been arrested, the police said, though his motive is not clear.

However,  the development has forced President Alberto Fernandez of Argentina to declare Friday a public holiday.

Speaking on the incident,  Alberto Fernandez  said, “Cristina remains alive because for a reason not yet technically confirmed, the gun which contained five bullets did not fire”, he said.

He described the incident as the most serious since Argentina returned to democracy in 1983.

“We can  disagree,  we can have deep disagreements but hate speech cannot take place because it breeds violence and there is no chance of violence coexisting  with democracy”, Alberto Fernandez said.
