FORMER French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has sparked a diplomatic firestorm after launched a blistering attack on Israel, demanding the Jewish state face immediate global sanctions.

The veteran statesman, known for his fiery rhetoric on the world stage, broke cover to “bash” Israel following the latest escalation in its long-running shadow war with Iran. In a move that has stunned Western allies, De Villepin insisted that the “whole world” must now turn its back on Jerusalem.

Speaking with trademark Gallic intensity, the former premier didn’t hold back. “This is the time the whole world sanctions Israel for what it’s been doing,” De Villepin declared. “They must be condemned.”

The explosive comments come as tensions in the Middle East reach a boiling point. While much of the West has remained cautious, De Villepin—the man who famously led the charge against the Iraq War in 2003—appears to be positioning himself as the leading European voice against Israeli military strategy.

Critics were quick to hit back, accusing the former PM of “siding with mullahs” and ignoring the provocations from Tehran. However, supporters of his hardline stance claim it is a long-overdue “reality check” for the region.

The “bashing” has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles in London and Paris. De Villepin’s demand for sanctions marks a radical shift from the usual diplomatic footwork seen by former European leaders.

He suggested that the international community has been silent for too long, stating that Israel is finally “hearing what they deserve.”

The Shadow War Steps Into the Light
To understand the weight of De Villepin’s outburst, it is important to look at the context of the current conflict:

The Iran-Israel Feud: For decades, Israel and Iran have engaged in a “shadow war” consisting of cyberattacks, assassinations, and maritime sabotage. Recently, this has evolved into direct missile exchanges, pushing the region to the brink of a full-scale conventional war.
De Villepin’s Track Record: Dominique de Villepin is no stranger to bucking the trend. As French Foreign Minister in 2003, he received a rare round of applause at the UN for his eloquent opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq. He has a long history of “Gaullist” foreign policy—prioritizing French independence and often criticizing Anglo-American or Israeli military interventions.
The Sanctions Debate: While Iran is already under heavy international sanctions, calls to sanction Israel are rare among high-ranking Western officials. De Villepin’s comments represent a significant fringe view that is gaining some traction in left-wing and “realist” diplomatic circles in Europe.
French Diplomacy: France has traditionally attempted to play “honest broker” in the Middle East, maintaining ties with Lebanon and various Arab nations while historically supporting Israel’s right to exist. De Villepin’s comments push the envelope of this traditional neutrality.
