LAGOS, Nigeria – In the quiet corners of countless minds, a silent struggle often rages. The weight of existence can feel crushing, the burdens insurmountable, and the future a bleak landscape devoid of hope.
For some, this despair escalates to a chilling question: “Is suicide the answer?”
It’s a question born of profound pain, not of weakness. When life feels unbearable, when every avenue seems blocked, and emotional suffering becomes an agonizing constant, the idea of escape can be tragically seductive. It’s crucial to acknowledge the depth of agony that leads someone to even entertain such a thought. This isn’t a moral failing; it’s a desperate cry for an end to suffering.
However, despite the immense pain that fuels such thoughts, suicide is a permanent solution to what are often temporary problems, however overwhelming they may feel in the moment. It is an irreversible act that, while it may end personal suffering, transfers an unimaginable burden of grief, confusion, and guilt onto those left behind.
One of the most insidious aspects of severe depression and despair is its ability to distort reality. It paints a world in shades of grey, convincing the individual that their situation is hopeless, that they are a burden, and that no help exists.
This is a lie. This distorted perception is a symptom of the illness itself, not an accurate reflection of reality.
If you are feeling that life is unbearable, please consider the following:
You are not alone. Millions of people worldwide experience periods of profound despair and suicidal ideation. There are countless individuals who have navigated through similar darkness and emerged into the light.
Help is available. There are dedicated professionals, support groups, and crisis hotlines specifically designed to help people in your situation. These resources offer a safe space to talk, explore options, and develop coping strategies.
Feelings are not facts. While your feelings of hopelessness are valid and real, they do not dictate the truth of your situation or your worth. Your feelings are a reflection of your current internal state, which can change.
Things you can and do get better.
Even when it feels impossible, situations evolve, perspectives shift, and new possibilities emerge.
Many people who have contemplated suicide have later expressed profound gratitude that they chose to hold on, realizing that the unbearable period was a chapter, not the whole story.
Your life has value. Even if you can’t see it right now, your existence impacts others, and your potential, even if dormant, is immense. The world would be diminished by your absence.
Instead of considering suicide, consider these alternatives:
Reach out for help. Contact a crisis hotline immediately.
In Nigeria, you can call The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) at 112 or Lagos State Suicide Prevention Initiative at +234 809 210 6473.
You can also reach out to friends, family, a religious leader, or a trusted mentor.
Talk to a mental health professional
Therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors can provide tools to manage overwhelming emotions, address underlying issues, and explore paths toward healing and well-being.
Practice self-care
Even small acts of self-care can make a difference. This might include spending time in nature, listening to music, engaging in a hobby, or ensuring you’re getting adequate sleep and nutrition.
Focus on small steps. When the future feels overwhelming, focus on getting through the next hour, the next day. Break down large problems into smaller, manageable steps.
Connect with others. Isolation can amplify feelings of despair. Seek out communities, support groups, or simply spend time with people who make you feel safe and understood.
Suicide is not the answer. It’s the ultimate act of silencing a cry for help that needs to be heard. If you are struggling, please know that your pain is seen, and there is hope for a different tomorrow.
Your life is precious, and you deserve to experience moments of joy, peace, and connection. Hold on, and let someone help you find your way back to them.
