Nigeria, April 11, 2016 – The Lagos State House of Assembly today called on the Federal Government to provide pedestrian bridges along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, noting that lives were lost due to high volume of human traffic crossing the expressway.
The House also called on the State Government to provide palliatives in form of road signs and zebra crossing on strategic areas on the road and ensure compliance by motorists.
Moving a motion Under Matters of Urgent Public Importance during plenary, Jude Idimogu representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II, lamented that several road users have lost their lives, while crossing from one side of the road to the other.
He stated that it was imperative for the state and Federal Governments to do something urgently on the road to save people from dying.
Supporting the debate, Desmond Elliot said he lost his mother-in-law on the road as the woman was trying to cross the expressway, when she went to buy foodstuffs at Daleko Market in the area.
The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa explained that the bridges were crucial to the survival of Lagos residents who visit the various markets in the axis.
“It would be impossible for the Lagos State Government to provide the bridges, especially this year as it was not catered for in the budget. It is a Federal Government road, but the state government can provide palliatives.
“We must ensure that motorists are made to obey the road signs that would be provided on the road for the benefit of our people,” he said.
