The NPFL title race was set ablaze yesterday as Ikorodu City—the league’s burgeoning “Oga Boys”—delivered a hammer blow to Rivers United’s championship credentials with a gritty 1-0 victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
In a match billed as a collision of tactical titans, it was the substitute Folarin Temitope who emerged as the hero, proving that in the unpredictable theatre of Nigerian football, the stars aren’t always the ones who start the show.
The Breakthrough
After a cagey first half where Rivers United’s defensive general David Sholumade marshalled his backline with Premier League-level composure, the deadlock finally cracked in the 52nd minute. The home side’s creative spark, Salami Farouk, unleashed a stinging effort that forced a frantic save from Rivers’ veteran shot-stopper Rashid Owolabi.
However, Owolabi could only parry the ball into the path of the prowling Temitope, who had only been on the pitch for minutes. The striker made no mistake, slotting home from close range to send the Lagos crowd into a frenzy.
Finidi’s Frustration
Rivers United, led by Super Eagles legend Finidi George, threw everything at the hosts in the closing stages. The introduction of Timothy Zachariah and Iyowuna Douglas injected pace into the visitors’ attack, but they found Ikorodu’s Chinedu Akuvuo—making a resolute debut—and the defensive unit impassable.
Despite sustained pressure from the “Pride of Rivers,” the league leaders looked uncharacteristically blunt in the final third. The loss leaves Rivers United with a paper-thin lead at the summit, with Enugu Rangers now breathing down their necks, both tied on 51 points.
A New Power in Lagos?
For Ikorodu City, this wasn’t just three points; it was a statement. By leapfrogging heavyweights like Shooting Stars to sit third in the table, the Oga Boys have transformed from mid-table outsiders to genuine continental contenders.
”We knew the quality Rivers brought,” said an Ikorodu official post-match. “But today, our stars showed they can shine under the brightest lights in Lagos.”
As the sun sets on Matchday 30, the NPFL crown is anyone’s to grab. One thing is certain: Ikorodu City are no longer just making up the numbers.
