    BENJAMIN OMOIKE I Friday, Sept 05, 2025

LAGOS, Nigeria — In a major step toward safeguarding its vast network of water bodies and unlocking the socio-economic potential of its waterfronts, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to host the first-ever Waterfront Infrastructure Development Summit, drawing over 500 experts from around the world.

Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Dayo Bush Alebiosu, made the announcement on Thursday at a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja. He disclosed that the landmark summit, themed “Pressure on the Lagoon: The Lagos Experience”, will take place on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, starting at 9:00 a.m.

According to the Commissioner, the event will serve as a pivotal platform to reimagine urban waterfront development in Lagos and other growing cities globally. It aims to foster collaboration, showcase best practices, and promote sustainable growth amid increasing environmental and human pressures on waterfronts.

“As cities around the world expand, the sustainable planning and management of waterfronts have become more important than ever,” Alebiosu said. “These areas are not only key economic assets but also critical to enhancing urban livability. This summit is a call to action for stakeholders to collectively chart a new course for our waterfronts that balances development with environmental responsibility.”

The summit will bring together a cross-section of stakeholders including government officials, private sector investors, urban planners, environmentalists, and community leaders. Attendees will engage in high-level discussions on the challenges and opportunities in waterfront development, while exploring innovative solutions and global success stories.

    Summit Highlights:

    • Global Best Practices: Sharing successful waterfront development models and strategies from around the world.

    • Sustainability Focus: Emphasizing environmentally responsible development practices.

    • Technological Innovation: Showcasing cutting-edge infrastructure solutions and smart technologies.

    • Investment Opportunities: Creating a platform for partnerships and funding for future projects.

    • Community Engagement: Promoting inclusive planning that reflects the aspirations of local communities.

Alebiosu further noted that the Lagos Lagoon, a critical ecological and economic asset, is under increasing strain from both anthropogenic activities and climate change. He urged all stakeholders to rally behind government efforts to mitigate the pressures and ensure the long-term health of the waterway.

“This summit represents not just a conversation, but a commitment — to innovation, to sustainability, and to inclusive growth. We are convening experts and partners from across the globe to chart a new course for waterfront development that can serve as a model for cities everywhere,” he added.

The event is expected to catalyze a new wave of sustainable waterfront projects and partnerships that align with the Lagos State Government’s broader vision for resilient urban infrastructure.
