January 31, 2015 – Supply of water to residents of Lagos State is in deficit of 330 million gallon per day, a report published by the Lagos State Government has said.
According to the report, total water demand for Lagos State by the year 2010 is 540 million gallons per day while water supply for the state was 210 million gallon per day. The report is documented in the Lagos State Development Plan 2012 – 2025.
It noted that service coverage in the state is limited to 44 percent, stressing that many people in the rural areas have no access to portable water.
It added that the organised private sector has been able to breach the gap of 330 million gallons per day.
“Of the total 210 million gallons per day installed water capacity for the state, Adiyan accounts for 41 percent, Iju 21 percent, Ishasi 1 percent and ground water 30 percent”, the report said, adding that more water could be pumped and distributed but that the water infrastructure is currently operating at less than 60 percent of installed capacity due to erratic power supply.
