Radical South African Leader Jailed for Five Years Over ‘Toy Gun’ Shoot-out
By SCM REPORTER
SOUTH AFRICA’S most explosive politician, Julius Malema has been slapped with a five-year prison sentence after a “celebratory” stunt with an assault rifle backfired spectacularly.
Julius Malema, the firebrand leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was ordered to go directly to jail yesterday by a magistrate who shredded his “nonsensical” claim that the semi-automatic weapon he fired into a crowded stadium was merely a toy.
The 45-year-old—known for his trademark red beret and radical “shoot to kill” rhetoric—was convicted on five counts, including the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The charges date back to 2018, when Malema was caught on camera pumping rounds into the air during his party’s fifth-anniversary bash in the Eastern Cape.
While Malema’s high-priced legal team insisted the rifle was a prop and the bangs were just blanks, Magistrate Twanet Olivier wasn’t buying it.
“It wasn’t an impulsive act. It wasn’t anger,” the judge declared in a stinging rebuke. “It was the event of the evening. To reason otherwise is nonsensical.”
The shock sentencing has sent shockwaves through South African politics. If the sentence stands, Malema—the fourth-most powerful man in the country’s parliament—could be barred from office just as the nation prepares for critical local elections.
Outside the court in KuGompo City, the scene was one of pure mayhem. Hundreds of “Red Beret” supporters chanted and sang, while party bosses slammed the jail term as a “political hit job” designed to silence their leader.
Malema, who remained stone-faced as his fate was read out, has already launched an immediate appeal. Legal experts say he is likely to employ a “Stalingrad defense”—a tactic of endless legal delays popularized by his former mentor-turned-rival, Jacob Zuma.
For now, the man who built a career on “shaking the system” finds himself facing the very real prospect of doing time behind bars.
Background: Who is Julius Malema?
Once the “Golden Boy” of the ruling ANC, Julius Malema was expelled from the party in 2012 after falling out with the leadership. He formed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a far-left movement that wears red military-style uniforms and demands the seizure of white-owned land without compensation.
Malema is no stranger to the dock. Over the last decade, he has faced numerous legal battles:
Hate Speech: He has been repeatedly dragged to court for singing “Kill the Boer” (a reference to white farmers).
Corruption: He has faced various allegations regarding state tenders, though many charges have struggled to stick.
VBS Bank Scandal: He and his deputy have been dogged by claims they benefited from the collapse of a mutual bank that wiped out the savings of the poor.
Despite the controversies, Malema remains a hero to millions of young, unemployed South Africans who feel betrayed by the post
