MILAN, Italy – Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been named in a fraudulent oil deal sealed by Malabu with regards to the lucratice OPL 245 awarded in the year 2011. Also named in the deal are former MI6 officers and the FBI. Nigeria, an Italian court was told lost about $6 billion as a result of the shady deal.
Malabu is an oil company owned by Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Dan Etete. Etete is accused of paying bribes to top government officials, such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, to ensure that he got the deal, a court in Milan, Italy has been told.
Recall that the former oil minister , Dan Etete, was earlier on found guilty by a court in France for money laundering, where it was discovered that he used illicit funds to buy a yatch and a chateau(mansion). He was also accused to have had so much cash in $100 bills that it weighed about five tonnes(5000 kilograms)
Shell and Eni have been accused of having fore knowledge that the $1.1bn they paid to Nigeria would be used for bribes, based on the content of emails which have since emerged, Ava Lee, from Global Witness told the court
“Looking at the emails it seems that Shell knew that the deal they were constructing was misleading but they went ahead with it anyway even though a number of Nigerian officials raised concerns about this scandalous, scandalous deal,” Ava Lee from Global Witness said.
Nigeria lost about $6 billion as a result of the fraudulent deal. The analysis, according to the BBC was carried out by Resources for Development Consulting on behalf of Global Witness, as well as the NGOs HEDA. The loses accruring to the Nigeria government were calculated using an oil price of $70 a barrel.
