LAGOS, Nigeria –  The Journalists International Forum For Migration-JIFORM has urged the Chinese embassy in Nigeria to work with the body to further promote trade facilitation and migration matters through media education.

The call was made by the President of the JIFORM, Dr Ajibola Abayomi, during a recent visit to the Lagos office of the embassy.

Speaking, Ajibola asked for support on capacity building for journalists covering migration to achieve better understanding of the trade opportunities in China and on migration reportage.

“Chinese people no doubt are endowed with trade, technology and construction skills. The JIFORM has been promoting purposeful migration of Nigerians to China and several countries over the years. We are here to seek your support regarding knowledge sharing to improve the capacity of the JIFORM members in the reportage of economic and migration policies involving China.

“We are also open to collaboration that will encourage regular migration to strengthen the relationship between us and your embassy as well as promoting better working relationships with the Nigerian government on foreign policies” Ajibola said.

Reacting, Jin Ming Yu, the Deputy Consul General of the embassy lauded the JIFORM for the visit and pledged to review proposals to support media capacity building.

He said that many Nigerians over the years have established businesses in China while the Chinese people too had also played some important roles in the Nigerian technology and construction sectors.

The deputy envoy reiterated the desire to work with the JIFORM to promote quality information about trade and investment activities of the embassy in Nigeria.

The JIFORM delegation led by Dr Ajibola had Bamiteko Rotimi Williams and Bola Adebola as members. JIFORM is a non-profit body comprising over 300 journalists and other volunteers across the continents covering migration matters.

Since 2019, the organization has become a major force organizing a series of local and international capacity building for journalists and other stakeholders. In 2021, it initiated the annual African Migration Summit held in Ghana in partnership with the Nekotech Center of Excellence, Accra, the West African Media Migration Summit in Lome, Togo and held its 3rd Global Migration Summit in Toronto, Canada in October 2022. The media foundation in collaboration with the City University, New York City, US between November 2-4, 2022 in Brooklyn hosted the international migration summit.
