AN AL JAZEERA journalist has been killed in a “targeted” Israeli drone strike that left his car a charred fireball in the middle of a Gaza street.
Mohamed Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was travelling through western Gaza City yesterday when a missile slammed into his vehicle. Horrified witnesses watched as the car was instantly engulfed in flames on Rashid Street in the Sheikh Ajlin district.
The Qatar-based network reacted with fury, branding the hit a “heinous” and “deliberate” crime designed to silence the press.
A spokesperson for Al Jazeera said: “The network affirms that his killing was not a random act but a deliberate and targeted crime intended to intimidate journalists.”
Emergency crews from the Gaza Civil Defense rushed to the scene but found the vehicle completely gutted by fire. They confirmed two bodies were recovered from the wreckage, including that of Mr Wishah.
The strike marks a grim escalation in the region, with media rights group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) noting that over 220 journalists have now been killed in the territory over the last two and a half years.
While the Israeli military has previously accused Mr Wishah of having links to militant groups—claims Al Jazeera and Mr Wishah’s family have always denied—they have yet to issue a formal comment on yesterday’s specific operation.
The killing comes at a time of extreme tension, with a fragile US-backed ceasefire, in place since October 2025, being tested by a series of fresh strikes and local skirmishes.
The Victim: Mohamed Wishah was a well-known face for Al Jazeera Mubasher (the network’s live public affairs channel). In February 2024, the IDF claimed to have found evidence on a laptop linking him to Hamas’s aerial array, but the network dismissed these claims as a smear campaign to justify the targeting of their staff.
The Conflict Context: Despite a ceasefire being brokered in late 2025, violence has simmered. Reports indicate at least 700 people have been killed in various flare-ups since the deal was signed.
Wider Press Toll: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and RSF have flagged Gaza as the most dangerous place in the world for media workers. On the same day Wishah was killed, two other female journalists were reportedly killed in separate strikes in Lebanon.
Al Jazeera vs Israel: The Israeli government has long had a fractured relationship with Al Jazeera, accusing it of being a mouthpiece for Hamas and recently passing laws to temporarily shutter its local offices.
