PORT HARCOURT, Rivers, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will on Saturday, August 18, conduct a bye-election for the Rivers State House of Assembly. Former member representing Port Harcourt Constituency 3, Victor Ihunwo, had on June 23, contested and won election as chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government Area.
Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Rivers State, Obo Effanga, told Journalists, in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, that the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly had communicated to the commission, two weeks ago, intimating the electoral body of the vacancy created by Hon. Ihunwo’s departure from the House of Assembly.
“The commission was informed of the vacancy by the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly two weeks ago and the law requires INEC to conduct a by-election into the vacant seat within 30 days.”
According to the timetable released by INEC, political parties were notified of the Rivers Assembly bye-election on July 27; last day for conduct of primary by political parties is August 1; last day for submissions of nomination forms to INEC is August 3; last day for publication of nominated candidates August 10; submission of names and addresses of party agents to electoral officer, August 10; end of campaigns, August 16.
